Comparing KCBS and GBA Barbecue Competition Events

We have completed our first KCBS {Kansas City Barbecue Society} competition.  It was a whole different ballgame, than the GBA {Georgia Barbecue Association}, the sanctioning group, we were accustom.             There are a few significant differences between the two competition barbecue associations. Competition Meat The main difference between GBA and KCBS are the meat categories for competitions. GBA has three main categories, pork loin, pork ribs, and pork shoulder.  Occasionally, there are ancillary categories, such as brisket, dessert or “anything butt..” In KCBS events, there are four meat categories, brisket, chicken, pork ribs and pork shoulder. Most KCBS comps also include a People’s Choice, which…

Successful Smokin’ Flamingo BBQ and Music Festival

Smokin J’s Barbeque spent five days at the Flamingo Lake RV Resort for the 6th Annual Smokin’ Flamingo BBQ & Music Festival.  It was a mini-vacation, for us; not just a barbecue competition. There have only been a few Georgia Barbecue sanctioned events at RV campgrounds and this was one hellva campground.  Over 285 full hook-up camping sites offering both 50 and 30 amp service, cable, sewer and water, along with 4 furnished cabins and two Yurts, provide diversified camping experiences (no tent camping allowed). Other amenities at Flamingo Lake RV Resort include free wi-fi service, laundry facilities, a general store and a large Walmart within 5 minutes of the…

9 Essentials for a Barbecue Competition

We have been competing in the Georgia Barbecue Association for five years. When we started, we knew nothing about professional barbecue except what everyone has seen on television.  TV glamorizes the competition, which is a blast – but it is very challenging and hard work. Every team who has won a trophy or money in a competition has truly worked for it. Experience has taught us a lot – as well as our fellow GBA family members.  However, prior to our first competition, we didn’t know about disposable cutting boards or heat resistant gloves?  We have absorbed knowledge by talking with our fellow competitors and devising unorthodox uses for some…

Judging in the Georgia Barbecue Association

If you like lip-licking, delicious barbecue prepared by some of the best competitive pit masters in the country, then you should consider registering as a judge in the Georgia Barbecue Association. Smokin J’s Barbeque are not only a professional cook team in the GBA, but we are also certified judges, for the association. We learned a tremendous amount during our training, which helped elevate our cooking game. Several opportunities are approaching if you want to become a judge in the GBA.  Prerequisites for Being a Judge You probably should love barbecue – lol! Like family – friendly events! Can dedicate a few weekends a year to enjoying fellowship with other…

Cooking and Camping at Three Rivers Festival

Enjoyed a beautiful weekend at Towns Bluff Park and Heritage Center in Hazlehurst, Georgia. Mother nature was wonderful to 28 GBA professional cook teams as they battled it out for the best in pork loin, pulled pork and pork ribs. The RV park/campground is a comfortable location for the teams, large enough to accommodate cooking rigs but intimate enough to enjoy fellowship among competitors. I give thanks for all the friendships we (Smokin J’s Barbeque) have acquired through the Georgia Barbecue Association. Comfort at Towns Bluff RV Park On the Altamaha River and the Bullard Creek Wildlife Management Area, the Heritage Center has a small wildlife museum representing native animals…
