    Sip & Swine 2021

Our first competition in almost exactly a year wrapped up with not so hot results. Many competitions were cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Our last competition was actually the Sip and Swine event of 2020. We walked on stage last year, but was not as fortunate this year. Competition was very fierce, as teams from all over the country travelled to Lawrenceville, Georgia for this event. Anxious pitmasters chopping at the bit to get back to what they love – BARBECUE! Popularity of Sip & Swine One of the few events scheduled for early 2021, the 6th Annual Sip & Swine BBQ Competition attracted teams from Texas, The…

    Competition Summary: Festival of Discovery

The 19th Annual South Carolina Festival of Discovery proved to be a great competition for Smokin J’s Barbeque and the City of Greenwood. Just under 90 teams competed for over $12,500.00 in cash prizes for the best brisket, pork, ribs, dessert, hash and “anything goes,” categories. Despite not walking on stage, we are very satisfied with our results, considering the incredible array of professional cook teams at this event. How Our Numbers Stacked Up We are most proud of our pulled pork entry.   It was the number one box on our table! Our ribs favored almost as well; scoring 21st! One judge was way off the mark, as he gave…

    Barbecue Competition: KCBS verses GBA

We have completed our first KCBS {Kansas City Barbecue Society} barbecue competition and it was a whole different ballgame, compared to the GBA {Georgia Barbecue Association}, the sanctioning group to which we were accustomed.               There are a few significant differences between the two barbecue competition associations. Competition Meat The main difference between GBA and KCBS is the meat categories for barbecue competitions. GBA has three main categories, pork loin, pork ribs, and pork shoulder.  Occasionally, there are ancillary categories, such as brisket, dessert, or “anything butt..” In KCBS events, there are four meat categories, brisket, chicken, pork ribs, and pork shoulder. Most KCBS…

BBQ and Camping at the Smokin’ Flamingo BBQ and Music Festival

Smokin J’s Barbeque spent five days camping at the Flamingo Lake RV Resort for the 6th Annual Smokin’ Flamingo BBQ & Music Festival. It was a mini-vacation, for us; not just a barbecue competition. There have only been a few Georgia Barbecue sanctioned events at RV campgrounds and this was one hellva campground. Over 285 full hook-up camping sites offering both 50 and 30 amp service, cable, sewer, and water, along with 4 furnished cabins and two Yurts, provide diversified camping experiences (no tent camping allowed). Other amenities at Flamingo Lake RV Resort include free wi-fi service, laundry facilities, a general store, and a large Walmart within 5 minutes of…

9 Essentials for a Barbecue Competition

We have been competing in the Georgia Barbecue Association for five years. When we started, we knew nothing about professional barbecue except what every one has seen on television. TV glamorizes the competition, which is a blast – but it is very challenging and hard work. Every team that has won a trophy or money in competition has truly worked for it. Experience has taught us a lot – as well as our fellow GBA family members. However, prior to our first competition, we didn’t know about disposable cutting boards or heat resistant gloves? We have absorbed knowledge by talking with our fellow competitors and devising unorthodox uses for some…
